The side of my chimney has a group of bricks cracking from last winter & I can see it getting worse this winter. Can that area be repaired without rebuilding the entire chimney?
Answer
It can be, provided the cracking is confined to that area and not throughout the chimney. If the lower portion of the chimney is in good condition then rebuilding the entire chimney wouldn’t be necessary. A common scenario we see in Utica is bricks near the top and side of the chimney show cracking or crumbling likely because the chimney has been taking in moisture from the top first & works its way down. Considering you can visually see the damage getting worse from one winter to the next we recommend you have it looked at sooner than later because the damage isn’t going to plateau. It will continue to get worse (and more expensive) until it gets fixed.
