My brother was helping me with something on the roof and noticed the mortar near the top of my chimney is cracked in a few spots. I canโt really see it from the ground. Should I be worried about it, and can it be repaired?
Answer
Yes, we repair cracked and deteriorating mortar on chimneys all the time. The top of the chimney takes a lot of abuse from rain, snow, and Michigan’s freeze-and-thaw cycles. Once the mortar starts cracking, water can get into those areas and cause more damage over time. Depending on how bad it is, we may be able to tuckpoint the damaged mortar instead of rebuilding anything. We would also check the brick and the top of the chimney to make sure there aren’t other problems you can’t see from the ground. Catching chimney problems early can usually prevent a smaller repair from turning into a much bigger one. We can inspect it and let you know exactly what needs to be repaired.
