Iโm noticing the cement between the bricks on the back of my house is starting to break down. Is that something that needs attention now or can it wait?
Answer
The cement between the bricks is actually mortar, but we get what you’re saying. Mixing up the terms is very common.
For your answer….When mortar starts breaking down, it usually means moisture has been soaking into the mortar. It’s common for homes in Berkley & the Metro Detroit area due to our climate. Some walls will stay damp longer which speeds up mortar deterioration. If itโs ignored, the bricks can start to loosen and shift & often times begin to fall apart as well. Tuckpointing is what we recommend which in simple terms is a mortar repair which involves removing the failing material and replacing it so the wall is sealed again. This type of masonry repair is much easier and less expensive when handled early. Taking care of the problem before it spreads would be the best solution in order to avoid more costly repairs down the road.
