Our HVAC company mentioned cracked bricks on my chimney when they were installinga high efficiency flue liner. Is that something I need to deal with right away?
Answer
We hear that all the time. HVAC companies will catch that stuff because theyโre up there and a lot of times they canโt complete their work until the chimney issue is taken care of. Weโve done a ton of chimney repairs in Grosse Pointe Woods. Homes near Mack Ave keep us busy because there are a lot of older brick homes.
Cracked bricks are usually a sign the chimneyโs been taking on moisture and itโs starting to break things down. It might not look like a big deal yet, but thatโs typically how it starts.
The good news is it doesnโt automatically mean a rebuild. A lot of times we can just swap out the bad bricks, match everything in, and get it sealed back up properly.
If it was pointed out already, itโs worth getting ahead of it before it spreads and turns into something bigger.
