My chimney doesn't leak and nothing appears loose, but the top section looks noticeably older and rougher than the rest of the chimney. Is appearance alone a reason to have it inspected?
Answer
Yes. Chimneys usually don’t go from looking perfect to falling apart overnight. Most of the time there’s a period where the top starts looking worn before homeowners notice loose brick or leaks. If it’s starting to look rough compared to the rest of the chimney, that’s usually a sign it’s taking on water and beginning to deteriorate. I’d rather catch it at that stage than after several more winters.
