My roofer mentioned my chimney crown while he was replacing my shingles. Is that something homeowners should usually take seriously?
Answer
I would. A chimney crown is your chimney’s first line of defense against water. Once it starts cracking or deteriorating, water gets into the brickwork below, and that’s when bigger problems usually start. Catching it early is almost always less expensive than waiting until the damage spreads. A lot of homeowners don’t even know they have a chimney crown until someone points it out. The good news is that catching crown problems early can often prevent much larger chimney repairs. That’s why we recommend having it looked at before another Michigan winter has a chance to make it worse.
