A house inspector noted mortar missing near the window sills before we bought our home. How urgent is this?
Answer
Inspectors often flag missing mortar on window sills because water can get into those areas & create leaks inside the home. A sign that this is already happening are discolored stains on the paint inside the house opposite of where the missing mortar is. If that’s the case then you may have some wood rot & drywall damage that will need to be addressed as well. If you don’t see stains or notice damp spots inside the home, it would be a good idea to have the window sills tuckpointed in order to get in front of the problem to limit water damage inside your new home.
