While trying to find where the leak was coming from, a roofer noticed a big crack on the concrete on the top of my chimney. Is that something that would stop the leak?
Answer
Often times yes. Roofers often spot cracks on cement chimney caps & crowns. Those cracks will lead to leaks inside the home and also create damage on the bricks on the chimney below the chimney crown. We would suggest the chimney crown gets taken care of, but we also suggest you have your roofer make sure your chimney flashing is in good shape. If the leak is coming from the flashing instead of the chimney crown, obviously fixing your chimney crown won’t stop the leak. Most people address both at the same time if the crown has cracks & the flashing looks like it needs fixing. A little unsolicited advice… if your chimney flashing does need work, we suggest you have a roofer fix the flashing & a mason fix the chimney crown. Roofers don’t make good masons & masons don’t make good roofers (flashing is something roofers fix & replace every day.)
