Small pieces of brick sometimes fall onto the roof below my chimney. What causes that?
Answer
Thatโs usually a sign the bricks at the top of your chimney are starting to wear out. We see this all the time in Plymouthโespecially around Ann Arbor Rd and Sheldon Rd where weโve done a lot of chimney repairs. The top of the chimney takes the biggest beating from rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles, so it breaks down faster than the rest.
Once that surface starts to weaken, little pieces will start popping off and falling onto the roof. When it gets to that point, itโs something youโll want to address sooner rather than later before it turns into a bigger repair. Replacing the damaged bricks and touching up the mortar joints gets it sealed back up and prevents further deterioration.
