The top of my chimney is starting to flake and fall apart in spots. I was told the entire chimney needs to be rebuilt. Is that true?
Answer
Not necessarily. The top of the chimney is the most exposed area, so it often deteriorates first. We commonly repair just the upper section when the rest of the chimney is still solid. From your description that’s what it sounds like. Chimney repair often involves removing the failing bricks and any weakened bricks around it and rebuilding that top portion. This seals the chimney and prevents damage from moving downward. A full rebuild is only needed if the deterioration extends much farther.
