Why does my chimney look fine from the ground but I see small pieces of broken bricks on my roof?

What you’re seeing on the roof is the early sign the damage is happening up top where you can’t see it. The chimney can look solid from the ground, but the top bricks start chipping and breaking down first, especially around the crown and upper mortar joints.
