Some of the mortar near the bottom of my brick wall seems to be disappearing. Is that something that should be repaired before it gets worse?
Answer
It should. That’s one of the most common places we see mortar wear out because it gets exposed to rain, snow, and moisture coming off the ground. If you let it keep going, water gets farther into the wall and the repair usually becomes bigger than it needed to be. We’d remove the loose mortar, install new mortar, and get everything sealed back up before it turns into a more expensive problem. Once the joints are sealed again, the wall does a much better job of keeping water where it belongs. Most homeowners are surprised how much stronger and cleaner the brickwork looks after the mortar is replaced.
